August 2006, Fontana, California

A young black man was hanging out in the apartment complex he lived in, enjoying the company of his friends. His name is Antonio Steward, just seventeen years old. A teenage boy sitting on the stairs outside of his family’s apartment. He and his friends were sitting at the steps when they were approached by a group of ten to fifteen men, gang members. They harassed the young men about having any affiliations, they had none. Antonio tried to explain that they were just kids, friends who went to the same highschool. There was one man in particular that stood out, he was the one who was asking the most questions. He even asked Antonio for a cigarette, when Antonio informed him he didn’t have any left the man asked again, “Let me get a smoke?”. Antonio even offered to share the last one he had, “This is my last one, I’ll share it with you if you want”. The group of gang members began to turn and walk away. The same man that stood out from the rest, took a few steps turning away from the teenage kids sitting on the stairs but, he stopped. He stopped and turned, brandishing a firearm pulled from his waistline, aimed and shot at the boys. Antonio shielded his friends. Nine times, Antonio was shot nine times. No justification. 56 life saving procedures, double leg amputation, 40% of his stomach gone. Antonio’s life was changed forever, Antonio is my brother. That day my family was never the same.

Who is to blame?

Yes, the man behind the gun. Roosevelt Turner, a crip gang member sentenced to life in prison. What about the negligent security guard that was too afraid to approach the group of gang members initially. He testified in court, “It was about 10 of them, and only one of me.. it was a situation I didn’t want to be in.” And so he wasn’t, he didn’t do his job.

I carry that with me. Armed Elite Services is founded upon the incident that almost took my brother’s life. We strive to be the company that makes that difference. Not the guard who was too afraid.
